Most of these projects are simply government welfare for scientists. I can't immediately think of anything practical that came out of most of this sort of research. Sure, we expanded the breadth of knowledge, but is that the job of government? I think not. I learned this week that three physicists received a Nobel Prize for the discovery that the acceleration of the universe increases. Wonderful. And that improves my life how? Not really. Most of these projects are simply government welfare for scientists. I can’t immediately think of anything practical that came out of most of this sort of research.
