Freescale Semiconductor MPC8548E Block Diagram

The MPC8548E PowerQUICC III processor family targets wired and wireless communications applications and imaging applications, such as enterprise routing and switching, telecom transmission and switching, 3G wireless infrastructure, network attached storage and high-end imaging systems. The MPC8548E family features PowerQUICC devices based on Freescale's 90 nm SOI copper interconnect technology. They support a combination of Serial RapidIO, PCI Express, and four Gigabit Ethernet interfaces.

MPC8548E family processors incorporate an enhanced version of the e500 core built on Power Architecture technology designed to operate at up to 1.5 GHz at 90 nm. The enhanced e500 core connects to an integrated 512-kbytes L2 cache, which is 8-way set associative and can be configured as cache, SRAM, or stash cache. The integrated DDR memory controller supports DDR SDRAM at up to 166 MHz (333 MHz data rate) and DDR2 SDRAM at up to 333 MHz (up to 667 MHz data rate, with initial offerings at 533 MHz data rate).

The MPC8548E family offers an enhanced integrated security engine that accelerates algorithms including DES/3DES, AES, ARC-4, Kasumi, MD5, SHA1/2, RSA and Elliptic Curve, and also provides a hardware random number generator. The security engine enables the PowerQUICC III processors to offer up to 1 Gbps throughput for commercial security protocols, such as IPSec, SSL/TLS and 3GPP.

The MPC8548E networking/telecom processor targets Ethernet-only or RapidIO interconnect interworking in enterprise networking, telecom transmission/switching and 3G wireless basestations. On-chip Kasumi algorithm acceleration enhances security protocol processing in wireless infrastructure, and RapidIO interconnect provides a high-speed interconnect to DSPs.

The MPC8547E storage processor offers integrated security acceleration with Exclusive Or (XOR) capability; XOR acceleration enhances system performance by offloading the compute-intensive parity checks in SMB and enterprise RAID storage applications.

The MPC8545E imaging processor's double-precision floating point capability and PCI Express interface for high-speed connectivity make this device a suitable for advanced printing/imaging applications.

The MPC8543E general-purpose control processor is a cost-effective device suitable for general-purpose embedded control applications, such as robotics and factory automation.

The MPC8548E Family supports 800 MHz to 1.33 GHz operation. Versions with or without the security engine are available. Extended temperature versions (-40 to 105°C) are also available.

PowerQUICC III processors are supported by CodeWarrior development tools from Freescale and by an ecosystem of development tools, operating systems, and applications from third-party vendors. The MPC8548CDS development system is available today from Freescale. Other development systems such as AdvancedTCA AMC form-factors are available from third parties.
