Freescale Semiconductor MPC8640D Block Diagram

Available in single or dual core versions, the MPC8640D delivers AltiVec processing targeting high-performance embedded compute applications, such as communication/wired (services cards and linecard control plane in switch/routers); computers and peripherals (blade servers); imaging and video (image processing and recognition); medical (image processing and recognition); military/aerospace (image acquisition and processing, cockpit displays; radar/sonar processing); and mobile/wireless (radio network controllers).

The MPC8640D enables designers to utilize high performance e600 Power Architecture cores and AltiVec 128-bit vector processing. The MPC8640D processor runs at 1.0/1.25 GHz per core while consuming up to 27 percent less power and costing up to 37 percent less than the MPC8641D. The MPC8640D processor features software, package and pin-for-pin compatibility with the MPC8641D processor. It is also compatible with Freescale's QorIQ devices.

The MPC8641D development platform comes with a Linux board support package (BSP). The MPC8640D processor is supported by software vendors including Green Hills, MontaVista, QNX and Wind River.
